It works, up to a point, IMO. The mixes are the ones our local supplier puts together but the quantities are about half what they (local) recommend. I'm applying a per. rye/red fescue and Ky blue mix but at around 4 lbs per 1Ksf and getting acceptable coverage. At the recommended(by the calculator) rates I think it would be a while before the clumping grasses filled in. For the extra cost of 2 lbs of seed, roughly $1.50, I prefer to go on the heavy side. That adds .15¢ per ft, which is a pretty small fraction of the overall cost of seeding. For that small amount I have never had a problem with establishing decent turf and not having call backs.
