Totally confused on this:huh

My owners manual on my 2001 F-150 supercrew says don't use dual purpose Mercon V or Mercon. It then says that one can be used for both applications but not the other. Then I go to the tranny dipstick and it says use Mercon V. I have been to three gas stations and none carry the Mercon V, (all the autopart stores are closed till morning) they only carry Mercon. So I guess the question is since it appears that Mercon V is not readlily available, Does Ford mean that I can use Mercon in a vehicle that specs Mercon V but I should not use Mercon V in a vehicle that is supposed to have Mercon??? Does this make any sense??

:headwall

I believe you are not supposed to use Mercon in a Mercon V vehicle, but you can use Mercon V in a Mercon vehicle. Make sense?

Thats pretty much it.Most of the newer fluids are better quality, and are backwards compatable.

The older stuff is usually only recommended for the older vehicles, and may do damage if used in newer applications.

I'd also reccomend you stay away from multi-use\multi-purpose fluids,or additives that will bring the fluid up to Mercon V specs. Most do not work as intended.

Thanks guys, I am all set now. I waited till the Autopart store in town was open this AM and got the last Quart of Mercon V they had in stock. Guess I better buy a couple Qts to keep around so I have it when I need it if this stuff is that scarce.

Just be carefull of the 4R100 transmissions in the F-250 and up SuperDuties. Those require MERCON only, and NOT MERCON V, or any dual rated fluids.
