Can anyone give me some tips on a swap I'm planning ? I've got an 85 heavy 3/4 ton 4x4 with 4.10's, 400 turbo and NP205. I want to make the truck a dually - have a dually rear end from an 89 to use. The dually rear is also 4.10. My question is what is the best way to swap the axle in ? It looks like the spring width is about 1 1/2 inches narrower on the dually, and about 6 to 8 inches longer as well. I would like to use the 1 ton springs if possible. Is it simply removing the 3/4 ton spring perches and installing 1 ton perches in the correct places to center the axle correctly ? It seems like the fuel tanks may be too close. Or would I be better off leaving the 3/4 ton springs on and just using the ton axle ? Thanks for any help - gutty

When I did mine, I moved the spring perches on the axel to match the leaf springs on the truck. I then had a new set of leaf springs made for truck to help handle the weight. The only issue to keep in mind is that the frame is still a 3/4 ton, so dont overload it. The GVW is still 8600 or so.

I am thinking he wants to increase the payload. Or are you pulling a 5th wheel trailer and want extra stability. I would not worry about the 3/4 ton frame unless you really load it up.If you are gonna keep under the 8600 GVWR don't bother swapping in a dually axle.

If you look JC whitney has a DUAL WHEEL ADAPTER KIT and for you truck the set is $359.99. That may be an easier swap. Also they sell Rear Fiberglass Fenders for about $370.
Maybe you should check them out.
