Nice pics. Any idea of why there are 2 colors?

Pa. has traditionally used tailgate spreaders, although I see a V-box in that last R model you posted. I wonder if anyone has kept a record of accidents related to the use of the tailgate spreader like overpass contact, wires torn down or even rollovers? I'm curious if the damages from these accidents outweighs the savings over the V-box?

The yellow trucks are PennDOT, the orange trucks are the PA Turnpike Commission. Yes in the past 2 years there has been a few dumps torn off, check out you tube under PennDOT and you will see one.

So thats what a PennDot truck looks like great pics i have never seen a Penndot truck to date going to Jerres or i should say trying to leave Jerres on 90 both times i left out with 7-8 inches on the interstate making my own tracks.

Nice pics thanks...

Ain't that the truth. I remember our first trek back to CT from Erie during a snow storm. The only PennDOT trucks we saw were sitting in the emergency turnarounds in the center medians of the highway idling...

:)

Sweet trucks!!!

Does the Tyler rig use a blower to disperse the material? I don't see a spinner and that disc up top looks like the impeller to my back pac blower. Interesting to see it's hydraulically driven, I wouldn't think a hydraulic motor would make enough rpm.

Here is a pic of the hydralicaly driven blower used by the Tyler system. I'll post a pic of chute setup next.

Here is the chute.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v693/Plowman58/PENNDOT%20Plows/PENNDOT%20Plows%2004-05/PennDotPic34SaltBlowerChute.jpg

The way this system worked was the blower would blow a stream of air down the smaller tube, the salt would feed out of the auger just like a normal spreader the end of the chute could be turned left or right to blow the salt across the hiway. Some guys hated this setup but some liked it. Trucks working in hilly areas liked the because they could pull next to a big rig having traction problems turn the chute under the truck and blow salt under the rigs to aid in getting the "stuck" truck traction. and it worked pretty good. I think the main thought behind this setup was the idea spreader could spread salt in traffic without throwing salt the normal way but keeping the salt low as to not hit cars and trucks durring operation. The problem would be if using damp materials the salt would sometimes clog in the hose and chute. At least this is what I've been told. Also liquid could be sprayed into the chute to make the salt work better.

I had noticed in a few of the shots the blades were straight. I wonder what the thought behind that is?

I think by looking at this pic above and knowing where this truck is the blade is angled he appears to be in the passing lane and being on this stretch of road there is parking on both sides one lane gets plowed one direction then the other lane the other, looking behind the truck both lanes appear clear. On the other action shop w/plow down I'm not sure why he even needs the plow down, road appears wet. But if I'm not mistaken the plow setups on most of these trucks have some sort of system where the weight of the plow is not placed fully on the road to aid in edge wear.

Dave, I do think your right a Mack with a plow "WOW":drool:drool Dave please do get some pics.

if he angled his blade he wouldnt clear as wide of a path. :D
everytime i see a pic of truck with a tailgate spreader and the dump bed up it makes me cringe. just does not seem like the best idea to me.

They don't travel very far with the bed raised, just up long enough to get the salt to the back of the bed to feed the auger. You do have to know where you are at and if any obstructions are in your way. I don't hear of many accident involving raised beds in my area.
