Hey guys, I'm new to this site. I'm also relatively new to plowing (2nd year). Someone was telling me the other day that bulk salt had to be stored in covered sheds in NY. It cannot be stored in a bin with a tarp or other similar set up. Has anyone ever heard of this? Knowing NY, it wouldn't surprise me if there were some crazy laws governing the storage of salt. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to the site! Where abouts in NY are ya? As for your question i was talking to a couple of fellow ploweres the other day about that, The one guy that does commercial plowing and salting did not know if any laws that require indoor storage. But then again like you said this is NY:headwall

There are some crazy laws here. Don't know what to tell you about the storage issue. Except wait to get caught. All the piles I see here are tarped, or uncovered, except municipl. I have heard that the storage areas require seperate drainage, etc...Do what you need to for your business, thats what your competion is doing.
We store our salt in a bin with a partial roof, and a tarp. Been doing it that way forever, no one has ever said anything. I have not heard of any state laws, however there could be local ordinances in certain areas.

In Maine you can store up to 100 tons uncovered. Provided it is not for resale, I read this someplace in a state publication but still doubt it.

Thanks for the responses. Snowjoker, I am in Staten Island.
Geoff, it's 100 cubic yards or less.
from the DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION - Chapter 574 SITING AND OPERATION OF ROAD SALT AND SAND-SALT STORAGE AREAS:
C. Exceptions
(1) A storage area that contains 100 cubic yards or less of sand-salt mixture at any time.
There is no prohibition on resale that I can find. I just stay under 100 yards (not really a problem:D ).
This is the only other pic I have. Yes its a 966, older, but still runs great.
