Finally had the chance to take some photos of the beast in action on this past storm. Its not very much snow (total about 3") but I'll take what I can get.

The more I use this plow (about 70hrs on it so far) the better I like it. If money was no object I would buy at least one more setup just like this one ( bigger spreader probably) in a second.

Awesome setup JD. Didn't take long to wear the decals off the plow.

Nice JD.

What type and size spreader are you running? I am running a under tailgate Flink with center dischage and love it.

I have put down about 85 tons of slat with my dump so far this season with nothing but smooth operation. Raising the bed to shift load is not at all any of the problems so many have spoke about.

I am back and forth about what plow I want to put on the 04 F-350 I am ordering. It is between a 810 and a second 8.5 MVP.

Nice!! How much did the 8611 run ya?

Thanks guys.

Cameron the plow lost its stickers in the first storm. Doesn't matter to me in the least however.

Ron the spreader (1.7) needs to be bigger for two reasons, one for the capacity and two for ballast. The current spreader doesn't weigh enough when empty and with the capacity of the truck I dont think an extra 4-5 hundred pounds of a larger spreader is going to hurt that much.

Paponte it was $5500 and worth every penny.

So for every one who likes this combo JD how much is the whole package truck, sander, plow, taxes tags and insurance? It must be near $50K.

That would be funny if not comming from someone plowing with a 1/2 ton nearly ten year old Dodge.

That is a great setup , except its a Ford . JD ,you have to trade up to a Cummins 600

When did Dodge make a 550?

We'll I didn't want this thread to degenerate into a brand war about trucks but..."let slip the dogs of war".

I understand that Dodge makes a pickup truck engine that is capable of 600 pounds of torque, but its just that, a pick up truck engine. Neither Dodge nor Chevy made a truck in this configuration when I purchased this setup, if they had then I would have at least considered them. They chose to ignore a truck of this size and capabilities (to their detriment) and Ford did not. If any manufacturer made a pickup truck capable of outrageous amounts of torque that would still not interest me since the carrying capabilities of any pickup cannot be compared to this truck. Any one who compares this truck to ANY ONE TON is either ignoring the obvious or hasn't has the need for a truck of this size. Chew on this for awhile The blizzard weighs 1350lbs, the spreader weighs approximately 850lbs. All the miscellaneous stuff is another 500lbs . even with all that weight when I load the spreader with 3+ yds of salt the truck handles even better then it does when empty.

Dodge makes a 4500,and a 5500 series pickup,it's just not availble here in the US or Canada. They need to get with the program, and start making them available here.

Chris do you have any pics of these big dodges? I know what JD means when the 550 is loaded it really drives nice and I could hardely feel the weight in the back at all :D that's bad I drive it like it's empty which is not good :burnout

JD you have a heck of a nice truck, and awesome plow! There isnt much that compares to the f550,and has 4wd.Its kinda in a class by itself,GM and Dodge could stand to learn something from Ford.

I'll have to chime in here when it comes to the reality of what a 450/550 can and will do compared to a 1 ton P/U.

After doing some work to my F-450SD PSD it handles the 1000lbs V plow in the Scoop and stacking with hardly any squating. That is with the 9' Dump bed loaded with between 4-5.5 tons of salt. As someone esle stated, You can foget it is even loaded and drive it as if it was empty it handles loads and plowing so well.

If you have a real demand for a truck this size you going shopping and find Chevy's oversize monster cab in the 4500/5500 line and does not offer it in 4X4, and Dodge does not offer the line at all. I guess your choice has been made for you like it or not.

I am VERY happy with my F-450 and would only do one thing different should I have the need for a second truck this size. That is I would buy a F-550 same options and do the same upgrades to get it to where I need it to perform. That is even if Chevy every does deliver on the promise to get their 4500/5500 line with 4X4. Dodge just was never even on the list when it came time to test drive and price.

I would think that by the 2005 model yaer the chevy 45-5500's should be 4x4 equiped from the factory.I have driven the 550 very nice and I would love to get one , been in the chevy 4500 and like the roomy cab and the air ride seat option that you can get with them and the tilt hood makes it easy to get at engine.I would like to really drive a chevy with a load rather than just sit in one at the shows or dealer .I guess there is + and _ for each brand

I think we all understand the additional capabilities of a 450-550 . I read it more as a Dodge vs Ford thing

OK, so it's a Dodge vs. Ford thing....

Which Dodge can fill the shoes of a 550?

JD PLOWER
02-11-2004, 09:25 PM
LG I'm going to guess that particular reply is for me (hard to tell with all the noise on this thread  ) but the truck is completly stock.

As you know, I am working on the same truck for next winter.

02-12-2004, 06:03 AM
LG I'm sure that it's the 141" WB because it has a 9' body on it .JD really has a great set up like he said in another post that he needs a just a little bigger of a sander .

JD PLOWER
02-12-2004, 06:37 AM
Thanks for the compliments guys :waving . LG cats correct, 141" . It would have a good turning radius except for the plow hanging out front :D .

jd i know this is a very old thread:D but i was looking at the pics you posted (which were great by the way) and no one else mentioned it, so i thought i would ask. what happend to the cutting edge in pictures 12 and 13?

JD PLOWER

PSD the photos are of an edge that broke and has since been replaced by a larger (5/8) edge that hopefully will last a little longer.
