You definitely want to put it in the hot line. Just like an egt gauge, you want to know the fluid temp when it is at its hottest. I just cut like a 4" section of the line out, and used a tee with JIC fittings.

The hot line comes out of the driver side of the tanny and bends underneath to the pass. side. It is steel. You can use compression (if you can find a 1/2" tee) or JIC fittings. The difference is Compression has 2 ends that bite into the line, and JIC has 1. I used JIC and no leaks.
