well i learned this week that the cummings mostly 2nd generation models have a flaw in the front of the engine. Inside the front gearcase cover is a dowl pin tha lines up the front case to the engine block. The problem is the pin can come loose and fall into thecam gear and cause alot of damage. The problem has happened so many times that cummings has come up with a repair kit that you can install a tab to stop the dowl pin from coming out. Ive had my truck for one week and i already did it. It took about five hours and sixty bucks. It may never happen but why take a chance. There is alot of info about it on www.dieselram.com . Good luck

It's been a well known problem for years. It's not real widespread, but when it happens,it can do some major damage.
There are several solutions, some being harder than the others.A fellow member on the Turbo Diesel Register came up with a jig,to drill and pin the KDP without removing the cover. The tab method also works, but you need to pull the cover to do so.
Either way,if you own An older CTD,make sure you get it done ASAP.It is one of the very few flaws in an almost perfect engine.

I'm jigging mine on Sunday. A few guys from around MN on the Diesel Truck Resource forum are coming to my hometown, and we are going to do some bombing, too:D :burnout

I was gonna jig it but i couldnt get a jig right away so i decided to tab it. It really wasnt much more work and plus i had the chance to inspect the gears and got to put a new seal in at the same time.

Matt, what kind of bombing are you doing?:D . any kind is good. I especially like bombing that involves turbos.moving /grinding fuel plates, and playing with governor springs:D .

LMAO at woodnazi:p We are killing 4 pins. We are going to do timing and slide the fuel plates forward, and play with the pump a bit. Any other adjustment mods that you guys can think of?

If your sliding plates, you need to block off the wastegate line,to get more boost.
Slid the AFC housing forward, and adjust the star wheel for more pre-boost fuel.
Get a govenor spring kit,it will really wake it up,and let it run hard to the govenor.
If your making more power, you'd better get an EGT gauge, and turn up the trans a bit to help hold the extra power.

Wyldman, I am planning on dropping the tranny pan within the next couple weeks anyway, so I will turn up the pressure. Now, I was able to read a little bit on alldata at the library, but don't remember the specs. Isn't there an allen screw that you adjust to within so many mm of the pointer? Thanks
BTW, I will be getting an EGT and hopefully boost soon.

The smaller silver one, with the spring is the pressure adjustment. Each turn out (CCW) is worth 3 psi. You'll need to cut down a 3/16" allen key for that one.
The black one, with the blue locktite is the TV stop screw.Turn it in about 3 turns (CW) to increase the light throttle shift points, and prevent stacked shifts.
You may want to PM John D,he may have more tricks to do to it.
Until you get the guages, don't get in it too hard for too long,or it may get hot.

Well, got the dowel pin taken care of. It was very easy once you are doing it. We were going to do timing, not the "proper"way, but it had already been adjusted, and we didn't know where it was until we get a lift gauge. Then, went to get to the fuel plate, and sure enough, the break-off screw was replaced:mad: Turns out, they just slid the stock plate forward a bit, so we left that. Then we bumped the AFC housing up all the way. I will play with the star wheel tomarrow:) Now I get a nice puff of black smoke on take off and have better low end, my evidence is the 20 foot :burnout I lay without even thinking about power braking:D
I'll post a couple pics when I get them
