i just bought a 95 dodge 3500 diesel. the transmission seems to shift back and forth alot even with overdrive off. would adjusting the bands help when i change the filter?

Yes,always adjust the bands when doing the trans service.You will need an inch pound torque wrench,to tighten them to 72 inch\lbs.Then back off the front band 2 turns,and the rear band three turns.You will need a 1/4 hex socket for the rear band,and a 5/16" square socket for the front band.

If your still having the problem,if its doing it with OD off,you more than likey have a TPS problem.The torque convertor is going into and out of lockup every few seconds. This will kill the trans in a short amount of time if you dont fix it.Either the TPS needs to be cleaned,and adjusted or replace it.With how much they cost Id try cleaning it first. Im pretty sure the spec is 1.2 Volts at idle,id double check it to be sure.
Wyldman was right on the money on the band adjustments,although neither band adjustment will affect the hunting your getting now.
