It may be bound up.Try rolling the truck slowly forward in neutral, while trying to take it out of 4LO.
Sometimes jacking up the rear wheels will also remove the bind.

A little info for you bigred1
If your having a problem binding up I would measure the circumferance of all the tires. If you have a missmatch, the tires are trying to roll at different speeds. It makes it almost impossible
to shift the transfer case.. If it was just a one time deal it could have been a gremlin..:) Just a thought as i've fixed problems like that with just a set of tires.. New tires and worn tires don't work.

Just a note on the '99 and up Super Duties. Well at least on our '99 SD the only way to get out of 4wd low is to put the tranny in neutral. That is how ours works and according to the owners manual. You can shift out of 4X4 hi at any time by just turning the selector, but 4wd low in neutral only to engage or disengage. Hope this helps .

I was going to suggest reading the owners manual. That should sollve the problem. If you don't know lever A, lever B!!!

Does the truck have a floor shifter or switch on the dash? If it is switch activated I would look for a fuse that is blown or a poor connection on the motor that moves the t case shifter.

Back up, roll in nuetral, go foward roll in nuetral, turn key off and restart.
Repeat as neccessary. Sometimes it takes 2-3 times if I have been driving in low range for 5-10 miles (off road on the way to friends cabin)

It sounds like he has an electrical switch, and also working properly. I'm sure it does it to protect the drivetrain, because of the gear reduction

I would guess all non-lever type t case engagement fords are the same nuetral and not moving to get in and out of 4 low. I know this is how it is on my 1992 Ranger.
