If it's warm enough out... I tried this a few years ago hoping to reduce the amount of work cleaning up these little clippers. Problem I experienced is that first 1/2 melting into liquid form, diluting the mag while temps are 10-20 degrees, then refreezing, making a bigger mess than I had to begin with. If you had a high enough concentration of mag and warm enough temps, it works fine. Other problem is with a little more snow and the bottom layer being wet, it creates more work for the shoveler, since 1/2 an inch of slop is heavier than in inch of powder... It's an art, and it's tough to master, I've discontinued the practice of pretreating sidewalks all-together. The only pretreatment effect I get is the residual from the previous storm.

I wont mention the most recent studies posted about the affect mag has on concrete... :(

Most liquids are intended as an anti-icer so the snow doesn't bond to the pavement or walks. The slush is heavy but it's better than an ice layer. Liquids work well when used correctly, like anything. You can put it down to de-ice but you will use alot more. Pretreating works great for safety concerns as it doesn't allow the ice layer to form. Adjust your application rates as the weather changes & you should love the way it works.

Check out Ossian.com . They have a sidewalk applicator that holds a 5 gal mix of liquid which you can go from like 24" to 48" . I have had great results with ossian dry. It will eat an inch easy with no vegetation risk or harm to cement. :popcorn2

Oh and click (Ossian LS). Its super lightweight and you purchase the 5gal solution. Plug in and go. I priced the LS @ 800.00 / 5 gal mix for 20.00.

As Todd eluded to the application of liquid is designed to prevent the bonding to the surface. That slush layer is heavy but when someone walks on it they will push their foot to clear surface for the most part. It is not expected to melt much snow. The Salt, calcium or whatever granular material you choose is what will take care of the snow build up.

Magic Salt is a combination of liquid and salt and will burn through an inch pretty easy and prevent bonding especially if used as a pretreatment
