I just bought a 69 chevy truck with a 350. It has been backfiring and I have tried to check the timing on it. BUT.........the crankshaft pulley is one of those nice chrome fixtures and I cant find the timing spot on it. I have also tried to find a spot maybe on the block. I have about a 3 inch flame coming out of the tailpipe when it backfires and need to get it fixed. Any ideas?????????

LONG............Did ya check the spark plug wiring order on
the cap to the plugs? Maybe a crossed wire...........
If not:
To find TDC on a Chev. engine...........
(DISCONNECT coil wire first!)
Pull #1 plug
Put thumb over plug hole and hand crank engine till
compression pushes your thumb off #1 plug hole.
Take dist cap off. check rotor position.......The metal firing
pin on top rotor should be approx. in the 7 oclock position.
If close mark the crankshart pulley with a yellow or orange
grease pen. Then shoot timing..............
If its not it may be off a tooth or so...But turning the dist. will
make it run and not backfire thru carb. or exaust in most cases.
Could be a bad valve, jumped timing chain, etc too....
Best off taking it to a pro, esp. if your not a gear head....geo

It sounds like it's retarded,or your running really rich.If it's running, then at least the timing is close.
Just loosen the distributor hold down, and rotate the distributor slowly clockwise and see if it gets any better.
If not,it's something else.Stuck choke,float sticking or collapsed,etc

It looks like the guy I bought it from had the wrong springs in the carb, with a mixture of a vaccum leak was causing the problem. It took me awhile to figure out because the engine is not orginal for the truck. It's out of a 70 Caprice. Had to find the year and orginal application for the block before I could relay start T/S. Thanks for the help guys.:burnout
