After driving for awhile at normal road speeds with the blade on, my engine starts making a moderatly loud whineing noise. doesnt seem to matter what angle the blade is at. it never does it when the blade is off. im not too concerned but wondering what it could be. is it the fan getting some sort of weird air current? fan clutch on its way out?
thanks,
Bill

The noise is probably the clutch fan kicking in.They make quite a loud roar when they do.The extra air turbulence created by the blade does make it harder for the fan to pull air through the rad,and it may be a little noisier withe the plow on.

the fan will make one hell of a noise when fully engauged on the newer chevys. My Diesel rarely kicks the fan on but when running down the highway it sounds like a damn hovercraft up front

should read when running down the highway with the plow on

Normal, I thought the same at first with my Cummins Ram, but figures it out real fast.

The clutch is fully engauged and it roars as the air is pulling in.

Just wait till ya pulling a heavy load in the summer.

Nice..
Yeah, hovercraft pretty much sums up the noise :)
so the fan is freewheeling pretty much till the clutch heats up enough to grab, i didnt realize that..makes sense, guess i never thought about it.
thanks,
Bill

Yahoo,

With the blade on and less air going to the radiator... do you see the temp gauge above where you run with the blade off????

If you lower the blade to help the air flow so it get into the radiator.. does that help with the temp and the noise??

Hearing the fan clutch lock up is always a concern the first time you experience it

nope,my truck seems to run at the same temperature (around 175F) all the time. the plow doesnt affect this truck at all (cept for the fan clutch noise)
although my old dodge used to make a big difference with the plow on or off,but the fins were 1/2 gone on the rad for the last few years. it never overheated in the winter, even with the plow on,but did make a big difference in running temp. the final summer i had it,i finnally put a rad in it,soon as spring hit it wouldnt keep her cool.

and no,it makes the noise no matter where the plow is positioned

While you may or may not see the differences in the temperature gauge, the plow disturbs airflow enough to make the fan clutch see higher temps, and it will kick in more often.
