Looking for a little advice here regarding my future daughter-in-law's 2000 Intrigue with 3.5 engine.

She complained about taking off from a stoplight and pressing on the gas and nothing happened. No increase in rpms, nothing. She shut the car off, restarted, and everything is fine. My son also said he noticed occasional shuttering/hesitating when driving.
I pulled the codes and got the following:

1st code:
- PO385 (crankshaft position sensor B circuit)

I logged onto the automotive forums site and found the crankshaft position sensor is quite a common problem and pretty easy to change. I prefer to go with OEM if possible but found quite a difference in price, and want to know if it's necessary.

-Autozone has one for about $58 with 2-year warranty, didn't ask what brand.
-Napa has one for $78 (Echlin, IIRC) with 1 year warranty, or OEM for $114 with 1 year warranty
-Rockauto has Airtex for $48, AC Delco for $69 or Standard Motor Products for $70. I can't find out what the warranties are for these.

Any input on where I should get it from? I'd rather not have to redo the job in a few months, or leave her stranded somewhere, but I don't know if it makes a lot of difference where it comes from.

2nd code:
- PO452 (evaporative emission control system pressure sensor input low). What should I look for?

3rd code:
-1372 (no "PO" refix, and I have no idea what this, code book only lists codes up to about 800). Any idea what this could be?

First on the crank sensor i would put in a Delphi you have to pull the starter to change so its not worth going cheap here the cranksensors see alot of heat and hot soak issues so running a budget sensor is a waste of time. The 1372 is a result of above.

Po 452 is probley a misread Evap code more like a po442 or a 456 big diff on what i tell you to do on repair.

Problem is this a code reader Sucks iam sorry there not reading manf spec codes which can be the diff between fixing something and guessing.

I know Autozone and all these places that are reading these codes are doing the public a favor and then the cheap readers that people are buying which are the same has the Zone uses but the truth is theres so many diff line specific codes these readers are way to generic.

Quick class back in 93 the Aftermarket whined until the Automakers were forced into OBD2 which became a standard in 96 OBD2 in short means all car manf would use the same code structure and call the same sensors the same and give them the same code defs.

The problem with that is take most cars now running multiplex and multi computers running off a standard U-Art line or Bus line theres no way a 50 dollar reader is gonna have enough room on its tiny drive to read that. My Tech 2 Scanner is running two stacked 32Mb mem cards and my Genisis is running a 64 MB card with a add on 64 and a Candi module to boot . Again its imposs to help someone based off incorrect code data has much has i like helping people its kinda like Mrs Smith telling you how to bake one of her cakes but leaving out the Flour.

This is why your getting a undefined 1372 code your reader doesnt know so it jumps to what is called a def line , same with Evap codes theres now close to 10 diff Evap codes so most small drive scanners pick off a 400 series code and drop it.

Its getting harder and harder to even help local shops that call because there running 3yr old software the cost to check, fix, and correct that tiny SES light is growing, and we havent even touched on reprograming which most shops other than the dealer have the ablity to do. When i moved shops a few weeks ago a Sec lock key you can hold in the palm of your hand was broke from a laptop we use it cost me 1300.00 to replace the key with a old SPS kit. The passthrew tool i use for programing all makes is 5700.00 , then add a writer which i can use to change certain things such has speed limiters on Sterlings and what can fit in a 4x6 Crash cart with scanners now is close to 27,000 dollars with laptops.

Ok Steve i vented a little but just yesterday i seen a little old lady bring in a car with a Evap code she had spent 1650.00 to try and get it fixed at a dealer non the less it turned out to be a .20cent piece of hose had a hole in it the industry in whole and what is being done to the customer just chaps my ass somedays....

Fred, first of all, thanks for the advice, and I'll definitely go with the Delphi sensor, just wasn't sure if it was worth it. After that's fixed, I'll check the evap system. Her family lives on a gravel road way out in God's country, and everything beneath the hood is dirt. I think it's time for a power-washing then check for cracked hoses, etc.

Secondly, I used to think I was "tool-rich and money-poor", but after reading what you gotta have/do/know just to be in business, I really like carpentry.

Thanks again for your help,

Steve

P.S. My wife bought me a paraffin wax thing to dip my hands in when they get chapped and cracked. Works pretty well for hands, but you'll probably need a larger size with your particular chapping situation. :wink Oh, and if it doesn't work for you, just sell it on craigslist.
