My wife is interested in the 08 HHR . She drove/ likes the 2.2 2LT with the 5 spd manual . 30 MPG on highway . What has anyone heard about these ? How is the 2.2 and 2.4 engine ? She drives 35K miles /yr . Will it handle the highyway miles ?

We bought an HHR about a year ago for a light delivery vehicle. Ours is a 2.4 with an automatic. The plan was for it to be used for delivering flowers anytime the arrangements were small enough that a full-sized van wasn't necessary. Well, that all changed when my mom got the keys... she commandeered it to shuttle my little sister to and from school, and has racked up over 30,000 miles in less than a year. She loves it, and it's getting about 27 mpg in mixed (mostly highway) driving.
Seems to be holding up well, we've only had it back the dealer once for a rear brake adjustment- the shoes were scraping the outer surface of the drums. That was when it was about a week old. It's terrible in the snow with the stock tires, so a set of snows might be on the horizon for next winter. One thing you should look out for is ABS. It is NOT standard on these cars, and ours doesn't have it. We had no idea. Not a big deal if you know about it and remember how to stop a car without a computer, but something to look for on the option list.
We're thinking about getting one of the new Panel versions and actually using it for delivery...

If you don't need the carrying capacity:
My 2008 Civic has 11,500 miles on it as of today
Purchase price $17,400
Best tank 46mpg
Worst tank 28mpg
Average tank 36mpg
No problem keeping up on highway, 5spd auto.
VERY high resale value
Sits very low to ground, got to watch curbs, parking lot transitions and such.
Oil changes are being indicated at 8,000 mile intervals.
If it last as long as my last honda, I will be very happy (284,000 miles)

They seem to be decent vechs the Echo Tech engine is working itself into the 4 cylinder family well it had some hicups in the begining but has and is turning out to be has good as the first gen of 2.2-2.4 class engines it handles a Turbo very well in the Solice option and cranks up some ponys.
I have had 5 dump the oil driven chain tennsioner assembly which now having done a few its not to bad of a job to do.
