Has anyone heard of Opti oil? I ordered a new 27 hp Kohler today and was told that if i use this new opti oil that they will give it a 4 year warranty on the engine. I have done a few searches on it and just haven't found it yet. I am told it is not a synthetic but has a german additive in it.

Its been around at least 8 yrs that I know of.It is good oil, pricey, but good. I use it in my air cooler Briggs I/C side valve 8hp(they run HOT),esp on the little wonder HO blower. Its 8 yrs old,and ive run it since new in it,and it uses NO oil between changes, and doesnr smoke a bit, which is impressive for an 8yr old Briggs. There oil also contains stabilizers and neutralizers for long term storage. If you use it from first fill,it doubles mfg engine warranty,as you found out.
I used it for a number of years, both their 4 cycle oil and their 2 cycle mix. I switched to mobil 1 synthetic in the mowers and stihl 2-mix oil once all my 2 cycle engines started coming up with internal engine problems. I blame the issues on the Opti 2 cycle mix.

I found opti-2 at J thomas http://j-thomas.com/Catalog/274_lubricants_intermix_oil.html
i didnt find opti 4 online,just there site http://www.opti2-4.com/
I got mine from my local dealer, whi fills all there small engines with it as factory fill,it has eliminated his warranty issues with ppl neglecting stuff, they still run a few years with the opti oil.

We've been running Opti 2 since before 1991 in all our 2 stroke engines, have not had any trouble at all that could be attributed to the use of Opti 2.
We have had an issue from not using the Opti 2.:( One of my employees forgot to put the mix in the can when he filled it. 2 strokes don't run too long with no oil.:mad:

We got on to Opti 2 a couple of years ago. Works fantastic in everything, lower ash and lower smoke as well. Also has a built in stabilizer as John stated, storing fuel for a bit is worry free.
Haven't bought anything with a new motor in many years so haven't had need to double any warranty with the 4 stroke oil but have used it with good results.

Pretty much same here.

Must be another issue, probably incorrect mixing,as I have not heard of ANY issues related to Opti-2.
I have used it for years, even did testing for them way back, and it was spectacular.Nothing on the market came close.
Most issues are caused by too much oil, which leans the mixture, and causes heat related issues, usually siezure or heavily damaged pistons, rings, and cylinders.

Chris, I'm no mechanic but that sounds backwards. I can't see how too much oil in the gas would lean it out and cause heat. Too little oil yes, but too much? Please 'splain to me.

When your air/fuel ratio gets lean, it burns hotter. Only so much fuel/oil mix can flow through the jets in the carb. The more oil there is in the mix, the less fuel can flow through the jets, thereby starving the combustion process for fuel. The engine might be well-oiled, but it can still burn down from being fuel-lean.
This problem is magnified by the sealed carbs of today's small engines-you cant just dial a little more fuel into them like we used to.

Thanks for the explanation, which makes perfect sense. I hadn't considered the jets being restricted by a rich oil mixture. Today is a good day, as I actually learned something useful.:D

Derek nailed it,more oil equals less fuel, and a lean mixture.Because the Opti-2 is mixed at 90-100:1,you only need a very small amount.A lot of guys think it's not enough, and mix it like reg oil at 32-40:1.You have now more than doubled the correct amount of oil, severely limiting fuel flow.
Alos, due to stringent emission requirements, todays small 2 stroke engines run very lean to start with, and it only takes a little more oil in the mix to start causing issues.

Chris got me on the Opti-2 way back. Most of the small engine dealers here say, you use that you void your warranty. Every Still or Echo dealer here wants you to use there oil. Even the Echo dealer who sells me the Opti says dont use it in newer engines.
I use it in my YZ 125 now and no problems so far. I like the fact its one mix for all and not 1 mix for my echo stuff and 1 for my Still stuff.

yea they have the opti 2 ans opti 4 and it is a good oil for less wear on the motor i used it once because someone gave it to me but i found no difference.

Dave, all I used to run was Opti then the local dealer that sold it closed up. Next time in the GTA you'll have to show me where to get it. I'll try it in the dirt bike as well.
Our local dealer used to push it with all new Stihl and Honda equipment.

Matt,
WE Enterprises (http://www.weenterprises.com/) is where i buy it from. Dundas and Jarrow Ave. East of Dixie on Dundas. I'll need to stock up again soon now that the bike uses it.
