How much was your second mortgage? :D Does it use a 1 & 7/8" ball, or 2" ball to move it around? :D Nice box.

Nice box i have a simlar mac from 1988 minus the left side, like Chuck said what was the Morgage i know i paid 3900 for mine in 88 i dont figure they have come down since then:D.

Sears has some really nice stuff they have rolled out in the last year or two ball bearing draws and SS metal even though i dont need another box if i was gonna fork over the cash for one i would probley consider the SS version to yours complete with work light, am/fm stero and power strip.

When your in a tool related business a tool box becomes an extension of yourself. It's your own personal space. To some this might seem kinda wierd but the "special tools" you make to repair something leaves a lasting memory. My tool box is like 30 years old. The draws are not ball bearing. There's rust on the bottom draws because of splashing water in my bays.I know where everything is. I can tell you a story of every wrench or socket that kicked my A** and ripped flesh trying to do something. It's mine, all mine, and nobody can take that away from me. UNTILL NOW !!!
Some of you know i'll be moving into a new bigger dealership. And in their infinate wisdom they are going to PROVIDE a tool box. I am going to have to attempt to put everything i have into a smaller tool box. I'm going to have to store my box somewhere for years to come. EMPTY. The last bit of personal space will no longer be mine. I'll have to bring tools home which will hinder my ability to repair vehicles as quickly as i could before. I will need to remember where i put things now which will waste time. Will i have to pay to repair this POS if i scratch it ?? If i dent it ??
i don't want it. No need for it. all because they want everything to look the same. &*(^%E&^%^*%^%$&%^**$^$%^$^#$%@#&*)&*()(&&.!!!
Some guys have just spent a ton of money for new boxes like 6 or 8 months ago. Now they will have to PAY for their box while it's sitting somewhere being useless. They can't get rid of it becuse if they leave there going to have to have the box to move.
I don't understand................
Anyway i do apologise for hijacking your thread. But seeing your new box just sent me 30 years back when i got mine and how proud i was at getting it as i can tell you are too.
Enjoy it.. well done... :drool

I know what you mean Mike about the only thing i can relate to with a woman and her purse:D. Like you when i bought my top and bottom Mac box in 88 i said hell ill never fill this thing the truth is it took a winch on a buddys trailer to pull it up on when i left the dealership, i too know were every things at and even added a vice on mine.

Two years ago when my aprentice now a Master certifed tech ;) passed his ASE tests it was a milestone for him and me Jay had worked out of my box and with me for 5 yrs proir jay is a very special kid hes color blind for one but, he had the only one thing i asked when i hired him on the desire to learn my way he has done that and then some, i bought him a complete tool box and tools from Snap on for his goal of passing his exams i would put him up against the best techs in the field today...;)

I have never been a auto mechanic, but i was a industrial mechanic untill last year ( broken back in car accident.) When I was younger I wanted the "big box", they were so cool to see at the local shops. I had my chance so I traded in my 2 boxes and some cash and got my "big box". It was kind of odd cleaning out the old boxes, and thinking of the cars I have restored and work done with the tools and old toolbox. But then I looked at the new box and said f@#! that old box :drool

Nice box! I still have my old craftsman that I bought when I was 16, that aint very big, and it's filled to the brim. Of course, I'm not working out of it every day either. Growing up in my dad's shop, I can still find just about anything in his 3 big snap-on boxes. One of the guys who used to work for my dad, now works for a Ford dealer, has a macsimizer box with dual side cabinets, the overhead lights and cabinets, the whole nine, talk about a second mortgage omg. He bought it brand new a few years ago, I just about crapped the first time I saw this monster, truly a thing of beauty.

Not to drag the topic but the one gripe i have with Snap on, Mac, and Matco is they bury so many young techs in debt before they even get there feet wet.

Iam very protective of my guys i do allow Mac and Matco to come in everyweek but i limit the time there here Snap on i still have a bad taste in my mouth from a Welder i bought . Honestly theres nothing i cant get local anymore call me cheap or what ever but craftsman tools work just fine for me when i equip a service truck or wrecker and all Special tools i get from Otc, Miller .

Intrest rates of 30 percent and those weekly payments have caused more heart ache for young techs who are still learning how to beat book times and gain exper they dont need that hefty payment hanging overthem.

4 yrs ago when Rob quit working for me i bought his Snap on Tamoliie cart and top for the Machine shop i stripped it down and painted it Dale Earnhart Bud #8 and keep it downstairs more for a show piece than work.

Again for those that want a nice box i have looked over the new Craftsman stuff and i would give it a big thumbs up,,, the Mac --mizer with all the add ons is over 10k just alot of money in a field thats still paying wages from 10 yrs ago.

I fully agree. My Snap On guy knows that I have a soft spot for the latest, greatest, whatever comes out. He also knows he gets cash everytime he stops, and sometimes more than once a week if he just has to show something off new. I agree with your issues with Snap On. When I had my old scanner, it was just to expensive for a "shade tree" mechanic like myself to update all of the time. Not saying it's better with my Solus, but do I have to update every year? I have just as much invested in my tools as I put into my 08'. Shoot I have close to 20k in my box.

Do I think they are overpriced? Yes on some. I also look at the 3 other Snap On boxes I have had, I know what I paid when I bought them, and golly if they did not go up when I traded them in. I go about every 4 years before new.

So, I fully agree Fred. Be careful to all the young techs, save your money, my first setup was Craftsman, and they do work.

Jon

When I left the body shop some 15 years ago, the winch on the car hauler came in handy.

I keep my boxes forever, if I switched, I'd never get used to where stuff is...
