I would make sure which ever one you get that it has a good auger or vibrater. If you get some dusty salt it can get stuck and not flow out
First question is what are you going to spread? Is it bag salt, bulk salt, or sand salt mix. Single stage units are great for bag salt, and sometimes bulk. If you are going to spread sand salt mix then you'll need a two stage unit. I have a Western Pro Flo 2 and I spread bag salt, but plan on going to bulk next year.

EIB hit it, figure out your needs. I have a Western 1000 and when I bought it I serviced about three failry nice accounts which meant filling once and heading out. Now I end up filling 3 or 4 times while out and am staring to wonder about a small bulk spreader. The bagged salt thing is great for not having any storage or if you don't have a loader, and I believe its easiEr on the truck. I have a loader and areas for storage and am getting lazier in my old age, I may convert to bulk next year.
I like my Western spreader, but if I were to buy another tailgate spreader, it would be a Pro Flow.

We had a Meyers unit for several years. I didn't like the fact that the motor was under the auger/spinner. Before we got smart and welded on a guard, we backed the thing into ice/snow banks on a couple of occassions causing damage. Salt and water also got into the motor because the spinner was attached directly to the motor shaft and there wasn't a real good seal. Replaced the motor 2 or 3 times.

We have the little Trynex and both the 6 and 9 cu ft. SnoWay spreaders. Like them all. the smaller units are on trucks that do residential stuff so as to maintain maneuverability. The big one does most of the roadway stuff. We don't do bulk since we have no bulk storage. Our salt supplier delivers on pallets which line the shop walls nicely.
Do put a vibrator on whatever you buy, and installing a light on the spreader will help you see what you are throwing.
