I am having trouble with the front end on my 1980 4x4. Everything from the spanner nut out is trash. If I replace the stock hubs with a set of Warn locking hubs is there anything I need to save or do the new hubs replace everything.

no you dont need to save anything as long as the axleshaft splines aresnt striped. If the snap ring is still in there try to save that but u can get new ones when you get the new hubs. The new hubs dont come with a snap ring. ANd front the extra cash for the hevy duty ones its only like a extra $20-$30. Well worth it. I put them on my 76 chevy 3/4 ton. If you have auto hubs i would go to manual hubs.

Thanks for the info,
This is the first time I have been into the front end. One of the Axel shafts is rounded off and I am going to replace it. I just finished going through the truck, new motor, trans, paint, trim, headliner, door panels, dash pad, bed liner. I guess when this is done, there won't be much left to go wrong.

all that said was right on. Get the warn premiums

Also remember to lightly grease the stuff. Dont pack it full. Dont mean to insult you but I didnt know if you were aware of the fact that you can definatly over grease wheel bearings and the hubs and such. (might as well repack em while you got it apart) And I like the ziplock baggy method.

place a glob of grease in a ziplock baggy along with your bearing and work it in that way as apposed to using your hands and getting em all nasty......

Although geting a box of laytex gloves makes life nice and you can do it that way with your hands and peel em off when done.

I bought one of those "bearing packers" but thought it wasted alot of greas and didnt really work too well. Maybe I just bought a junk one

You didn't insult me at all, this is the first time I have done any work on the 4x4 unit and I can use all the help I can get. One of the reasons I am having trouble with the front end is that I thought that if I was not using the 4 wheel drive I did not need to worry about it. After doing some reading I found out that even it your not using it you still need to lock it in and drive with it ingaged about 10 miles a month.

the auto hubs kinda have a habbit of kersploading themselves.

one of my first fond wrenching memories was trying to fix em myself and then trying to figure out how the stupid little bastards went back together behind my buddies garage in autum with the only light being a desk lamp at 3am trying to get it drivable for work in the morning.......ahh the good old days :D

When dealing with grease and constanly going between that nasty grease and stuff you dont want to get nasty a box of sergical laytex gloves make life very nice.

And dont cheap out and figure you can deal with all the snap rings with a pair of screwdrivers. Those rings can be a big PITA. Buy the snapring pliars, and a good pair or set if you dont get the ones that you can change between the different kinds. A assortment of little picks might help too. Kinda like dont be a cheap ass and just buy the brake tools because you will wish you did when the visegrip slips off the spring and you end up knocking yourself on your butt because you just punched yourself in the mouth.

and if I remember correctly certian years use one of the rings and others dont. read the destructions and make note of that. trust me if you just skim over it because it looks easy enough you will miss this detail and spend much time getting very pissed off, not that this has happend to me or anything LOL

And be carefull about getting big globs of grease on your brake rotors. It will get hot and start to smoke bad and stink and it will scare the bejesus outa you till you figure out what you did. I know it kinda freaked me out anyway when I stopped at a light and smoke started rolling in and from the wheels that I just had off

I could probably write a book on things not to do because it will cause you much pain suffering and lack of girls.....like for some reason girls arnt turned on by the stench of a gallon of 80 90w that gets dumped in the back of your blazer  Cant tell you how many times my dad told me "if you keep doing stuff like that you will never get laid" :o :D
