Hope things are well...

Been lurking for a couple of months now and have enjoyed the banter and the fine info you folks have shared, truly a great site Chuck...

In October of last year, I purchased an '86 Sierra 3500 with a dump, that was the main reason for purchasing the truck(for cleaning out Rental Properties and my contstuction biz), but as a bonus, it came with an 8.5 myers and an 8' Gled Hill Niagra Spreader...whelp, with things as they are, I didn't get the plow and spreader quite ready to go for this year, but truly love the truck...it's a one owner and was used by him to do three cemetaries in a neighboring town, that's the only use it's had...82,380 original miles and runs great...more on that later along with some pics, but for now, the reason for my post...

For four years on the web now I've been hosting websites and creating my own eCommerce software, allowing folks to put their wares on the web for sale...I've seen viruses/worms come and go and have always protected myself the best I can...

I run quite a few websites with forums, some for fun but mostly supporting my software, marketing and the web in general for trying to make a living(I like going to work in my PJ's) This morning I took the time to post this ditty to all of those forums and thought you folks might benefit from a little info on the latest round of worms/viruses going around...I know you guys are busy with the events happening here in the North East and maybe could be 'dupped' into opening an infected email...

Anyways, I'm not an affiliate of the anti_virus software I list below, it's just the one I recommend to all my forums...if the info below can keep one person on this forum from getting infected, the post is worth it to me...

*******************************************

The worst thing about viruses/worms is that you might not even know you have been infected, they can work behind the scenes...basically, your only defense is a good offense and that is an up to date anti_virus software that can detect and eliminate the bugs...

I use kapersky's from avp.ch It's user friendly and doesn't mess with my 'puters as some of the bigger names, macafee, norton, etc...but whatever you use(and you should) the key is keeping it up to date...on their site(links below) the last one reported in 2003 was at the end of October and up until January 19 of this year, we had no new ones to pop up around the world...but since then, there have been three...

On the 19th, the Bagle (http://www.avp.ch/avpve/worms/email/bagle.stm) was reported...

On the 26, the
Duamru.j (http://www.avp.ch/avpve/worms/email/dumaruj.stm) was linked...

And a little later that day, the Novarg.j (http://www.avp.ch/avpve/worms/email/novarg.stm) or MyDoom was spotted...

The MyDoom, if you read the info at the link above, does it's business in the usualy way, you need to double click(open) the attachment in the email...the bug then scans your drive for different file extentions and looks for valid email addresses within them...the bug carries it's own SMTP engine and can email all of those addresses an infected copy of the same email you received...so you can see how these things can mutiply...

But, the MyDoom goes a couple of steps further...it uses file sharing program like Kazaa to propagate and also contains a DosAttack funtion that will begin on the 1st of Feb and continue thru the 12th or so...it also allows the creater of the worm(the *#%%^#!~) to gain access to your 'puter and do things you wouldn't like...nasty

Anyways, get and make sure you have anti virus software, with all current updates...don't open any attachments, even if they 'seem' to be from folks you know, until your software has scanned them and you should be hassle free...

All the best

Brad

Thanks for the welcome...as for the concern?, well, alot of folks working their computers during the day innocently click on an attachment from a friend, not knowing that their friends computer has been affected and the propogation continues...next thing they know, their computer is off to the hospital for repairs...

the "Novarg.j" virus I linked to is a nasty one if opened on your computer, allowing the person responsible for it to actually come on to your machine and do things thru a 'backdoor', open up documents, programs, etc... it was simply a heads up because it's spreading fast thru the attachments...just scan the darn things before opening, with whatever anti_virus software you use...

John, first chance I get with the digital(and after a bath) I'll put up some pics and get one into my avatar...thanks
