View Full Version : Jan 25 & 26 2004 Mid Atlantic & NE Snow
Looks like a decent storm will materialize for the Mid Atlantic for Sun\Mon. I'll be hoping for a more northern track than what they are thinking now ;-) Good thing with this one is there will be a high to the north to help keep the cold air in here, so we shouldn't be seeing ice like the similar system last Sunday. Here is Gary Gray's first stab at it.

"Can somone post a forcast graph for monday-tuesday?"
Woofsplow,
Its actually rare to see a graphic this far in advance. The "Tuesday Event" is a separate system that may or may not be spawned from the Sun\Mon system. When it gets closer & seems like it really may happen, then forecasters will post such graphics. I wouldn't anticipate seeing any for that storm until this one is just about underway, so not until Sunday or Monday probably. That event will be a coastal storm that could bring a good snow to the NE.
I have seen a few forecasters mention "around" the 31st, and I believe this is the NorEaster Pelican is talking about. In between the Sunday - Tuesday events & that potential one, they are thinking a few Alberta Clippers will roll through. And a few people have mentioned seeing good things for February including potential Nor Easter's!! What a winter is shaping up for our area :grinz :cash :shades

Woofsplow,
The NWS posted a SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT for US
southen Ct
ALL IN ALL...THE POTENTIAL EXISTS FOR A SIGNIFICANT ACCUMULATION OF
SNOW SUNDAY NIGHT AND MONDAY...HAMPERING TRAVEL CONDITIONS FOR THE
BEGINNING OF THE NEW WORK WEEK. HOWEVER...CHANGES IN THE TRACK OR
INTENSITY OF THE LOW COULD RESULT IN CHANGES TO THE FORECAST. IF THE
LOW TAKES A MORE NORTHERLY TRACK...A WINTRY MIX WOULD BECOME MORE
LIKELY MONDAY AND MONDAY NIGHT. IF THE LOW TRACKS FARTHER
SOUTH...THE HEAVIEST SNOWFALL MAY SHIFT SOUTH OF THE AREA
We'll see if it tracks further north.
Iv'e also heard about a possible bigger storm at the end of next week.

Anyway, Gary has updated his map, for the better for many ;) That map includes the possible secondary & separate low that may form Monday - Tuesday, so that's why his totals have increased. My NWS is saying for here 4"-7" total between Sunday nights snow, and then Monday nights snow sleet freezing rain then back to snow event. Time will tell.
And for another perspective of guesses, here is Accuweather.com's map through Sunday 7:00 PM.

NYC local weather ( Channel 7 )WABC 11:05 pm
just stated that the cold air mass from Canada may be stronger than they expected, and that this may force the snow accumulations of up to 3 inches or more south of NYC, and lesser amounts north of NYC.
This was just the early teaser at the beginning of the newcast, the full weather is yet to come.

Judging by that, where I am in NJ will get 4-8". :shades I dont know what to believe though, I just put on the Weather Channel amd they are saying 1-2" for my area. Thats a big difference in forecasts. The Weather Channel doesnt even have a Winter Storm Warning or Winter Weather Advisory up for my area, making it seem like whatever is on its way, is of no big deal. JCurtis, that is a great idea for a web site. :) Mike

Brian,
I cut in the edge and mounted the type 2. I can already tell it's going to be better just going out and wearing it the rest of the way in:D Barely(and i mean almost none) any chatter when the blade is straight and perpindicular to the truck on bare pavement;) Feels much closer to steel only quiet like urethane. When I first got the new edge, I thought to myself this is just as flexible as my type 1 untill I took the old edge off and it felt like a limp noodle:eek:
I'll let you know more tomorrow;)

As I said in my posts, Gary's map includes both systems, Sun - Wed. The local NWS, et al, are giving predictions for the next 24 hours, and then tomorrow they will give their accumulation predictions for that next 24 hours. So with tonight's system being a 2"-4" for us, and Tuesday's system potentially being another 2"-4" event, that puts us at 4"-8" for gary's guesses ;). They are truly at a loss for the secondary (and a possible third) low forming tomorrow afternoon\night, so the predictions for this mess have been difficult at best.
What I haven't gotten is all of the Ct & Mass & Northern NY people I've seen post or say in chats that their local news forecasts have said a big storm for tonight for those areas. This was never the type of storm that might do that, so I can't figure out how they could say that. This has been predicted all along as a southern storm mixing with a clipper style air mass aimed at the Mid Atlantic, not the normal low that runs up the coast :beatsme . Now if the secondary low does form, that will ride up the coast and that could bring some nice snows to those areas, IF some cold air can stay in place aloft, but that would be a Monday\Tuesday event. But now they are thinking too much of the gulf moisture will pull in with the initial southern storm, so we may be dealing with lots of ice\sleet\rain closer to the coast before a final changeover to all snow on its way out Tuesday with the second system. I am hoping for (prediciting) a push tonight, & another one tomorrow night. Either way, it looks like we'll get at least a few salt runs in :cash Good luck to all who get some.

JD,
The latest weather chanel discussion .they have started to use the NOR-Easter line , and are throwing around 1FT amounts
for up by the Mass Pike.
They are also hinting / talking about the same thing for the end of the week.
Also the local news staions are echoing the same.
All wait and see situations.

Predicting the weather is like predicting who will win the lottery. Changes every 5 mins, first a dusting and sleet to 3-6 inches. Big Storm though.

01-25-2004, 01:42 PM
I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed!!!:D I'll be happy with anything above 3" of snow.
OK Since I posted that, our area has been down graded from an advisory for tonight. SO the first event is a bust for here. But they are now putting their money on the technically 3rd low that will develop Tuesday into Tuesday night. That is the one that things are in place to make it become a potential classic winter Nor' Easter. :grinz So hopefully the Mid Atlantic gets some snow out of tonights event, because that bigger storm will miss their area Tues, but it has the potential to put out some decent snows on its way up the coast. So now my prediction for this area looks like maybe a push tomorrow AM but probably not, definitely a salt run. Then the second low will persist with light but PIA sleet & freezing rain Monday & Monday night that should equal a salt run or 2. Then Tuesday night a good push or 2 as this 3rd low gets cranking for real. :grinz :cash plowing!

For Pittsburgh, in the past 24 hours I've seen predictions ranging from 1"-2" up to 3"-7", and back down again. On the 6 o'clock news the weather guy on Pittsbugh's NBC affiliate said 2"-4", and he's thinking it'll be closer to the lower amount, but with sleet and freezing rain to follow. He says it'll be changing to the freezing rain around daybreak, but Accuweather has the change happening around 1 a.m. NWS, by the way, is still calling for 3"-5".
How the heck are you supposed to plan your night's work with information that's so lacking in consistency?

Well Part 1 is over now. We got about .5" here. Woulda been more but we got hit with 2 different dry slots, so that dropped the accums here. Philly area & South Jersey did good with 3"-6" reported. I'm sure the MD, VA, & DE gang did well also, and they're probably still out working. Residual salt worked well in my biggest lots, especially where I had major ice problems from last Sunday's storm. So I did some partial saltings & a few complete saltings & the lots look great & should be OK through the day as the radar is showing Part 2 to start after evening maybe. Since Parts 2 & 3 are completely different from this event, I'm gonna start a new thread for those, and post a cool looking map that's out there ;).

The only thing I've learned from watching the locals and reading the sites is the track is very important (no kidding!) and a diffrence of less than 50 miles can make all the diffrence in the world. We could be anywhere from 3-6" to 10-20" maybe higher. This storm scares me in that the snow ratios could be 15.1 or maybe more and the forecast could change ALOT just from that.
Need to make a call on the loaders soon :headwall .
