Was tired of guessing all thing like, "Where was the Pole" or "I the auger too fast"? So After looking at a few different systems I ended up with this.

Let us know how it works. I have thought about something like it. Hate not being able to see behind the spreader.

Good luck with it.

Have used it during salting already and it works great. Can see alot to the rear and can see the feed and spread rate great. Now I can use my side mirrors to look for obsticles and not looking to the salt spreading. As with any camera there is not depth perception but you can at least see when there is something back there.

I do love the center discharge too. One run in the direction of travel for each traffic lane is perfect. Leaves a nice over lap in the middle and does not salt blast the cars, sidewalk, or grass on either side. I have cut my salting time down and reduced amount of product.

Ron What brand of camera is it and where did you get it? Is it like the regular backup cams you see on the trash trucks?

The brand it S A V V you can find them on E-bay. $400.00 all total can the install about 30 min, just had to fab a mount. Like the garbage trucks but alot smaller both in the camera unit and the monitor.

Did you have to clean the lens often?

During a storm if it is really wet from time to time. Usually when I get out to check the load I would wipe it off. Maybe two or three times during the night, no big deal really.

Any pics of it on?

If you look hard you can see it is on, you can see the spinner on the lower right corner. It is brighter than than when you are inthe cab. I will try some pictures at night. The Camera kept changing focus when the light from the monitor came on.

Hi Ron,

Do you think that this camera could be used with a pull plow to better guage the distance to walls, etc.

4evergreenlawns

Not sure where you would mount the camera to clear the pull blade but with some time you could make it work. Maybe mount the camera on the rear of the cab and remove the tailgate? The angles the camera pick up is awesome like 130 left and right and 270 top to bottom.

That camera must be great in the summer when your connecting a trailer :)

Motorhomes have had these cameras for some time now . Most of the screens have calibrated increments for distance from the rear bumper ,but this would be tough utilize and to mount unless it was at the top of a spreader (most point downward) . I think they would be great for general viewing of the area behind you .

Bwhite,

Yes, general viewing, and like I mentioned nice to see the spinner and feed rate and use the side mirror to actually see things other than looking for the salt pattern.

Cat,

I hope it help with the trailed hook up too. Hard to see inthe pic but right not I have a mud flap covering the trailer rec'r for obvious reason, but I am sure I will be able to see the ball and hook up when I change out for summer.

looks good but it seems you would possibly have a problem with snow/slush getting all over the cam and obstructing the view...

We are using a pair of cameras from RV Cams in Louisiana. They are color, high-res, with automatic IR for darkness. Play through a couple of different monitors that flip the image for you.

This system has been very handy for a certain project we have been playing with.

Fred thanks for the info. I am considering the radio shack route to keep costs down but I am concerned about the camera being able to take the conditions out there. Many of the cameras will list their operating temps and some seem a little flimsy to be out there all winter in below zero temps. How does the radio shack camera hold up? Is it a "pen" type or more of the box type?

Pbeering thanks for the heads up on the RV cams place. Just curious what does that type of set up go for?

The reason I bring all this up is I recently purchased a used 810 from a contractor who had one (a camera setup) and its the same one as Ron's (4Evergreenlawns) and its really sweet, but its five hundered bucks. That's really too much for me considering that I'll have temps driving the trucks and some might know the true value of these things!

Thanks for the help guys.

B white posted the link for the outfit I use. They are simply fantastic. Support has been outstanding. I am using one of their cameras inside the spreader to monitor activities there. No problems at all. One of the better goodies I have put on the truck.

I know the rv cams are nice i install them , however JD didnt want to spend a ton for the system thats why i suggested the RS setup which works well.

I'm sure the other Canadians on here have seen the Canadian Tire commercials on TV about their rearview cameras. On sale for $149.99 right now. I picked one up today and will get it installed by the end of the week when I get around to it. It wires into the reverse light wiring so it turns on when you're backing up. No idea how it'll hold up, but figured I can't go wrong for $150 bucks. For the first time it won't be me in the salt truck, it'll be one of my young employees. If it keeps him from backing into a frozen snowpile (or worse) it'll pay for itself. Even if it only lasts one winter.

This thread has been brought back up and thats good i know the sole reason i put the RS camera on the service truck in 17yrs of plowing up until 03 we had never hit or damaged property , its was Feb and i had been in the service truck for probley close to 13 hrs finsihing the last job of the night i back into a Old Aurora i busted a reflecter on the bumper of the service truck and a slight bend in the step bumper but did 4500 dollars damage to the Olds so back up camera's on poor rear visablity trucks is a must have.

Only diff is for me i am glad i didnt spend a grand for something RS has for about 300 bucks. Seems on the Rv's after three years or so iam always running new cable from the monitor to the camera.

I just found a wireless color camera with screen at "PepBoys" parts store for $100. The Camera powers off your reverse light to activate only while in reverse then uses wirless signal (can't find the MgH) to transmit up to the screen which can be powered by cigarette lighter or it comes with a hardwire pigtail/plug. It is in color and comes with a 2.5" screen. It does say that a Bluetooth signal will interfere with the camera and vice-versa. I figured, for a $100 it is worth a try. I have not installed it yet but was planning to mount it 1/2 way up the utility body so I could use it for backing up to my tool trailer as well as backing up while plowing. It comes with a plastic mount that is designed to mount up to a liscence plate. Since utility body plates are off to the side, I did not want to do that. I was going to hack up the mount to make it smaller then mabey mount it up to the door/upper bumper area. I should be installing this week.

I have one in my truck, i got everything off ebay. Your best bet is to go with an infered camera. i have mine so i can see my trailer hitch so i can judge the distance better. I have the monitor on all the time with ignition and i have the camera turn on with the reverse lights. ill post some pics in a bit.

snowyleaf, this may be to much to ask, but it would be nice to see what the picture looks like looking at the monitor. i think this is a really good idea as long as it works at night and you can judge the distance from the back of the truck to the object behind it. if the cost is $100 that seams like a good deal.
