OK, don't even start, it's a long story so if you can help, please do.

I have a customer who is wondering if there is any different grades or types of of sand or grit that work well on sidewalks. Any help would be greatly appreciated. And who might be a supplier.

When I have some time I'll explain the situation further.

TIA

Wow, what a gritty question!

Exactly what grit were you looking for? 220 is good for prep sanding, but most prefer something like 60 for rough work.

600 is probably too fine for much traction, particularly when wet, (although it will do rather nicely on a top finish coat......especially when followed with some 1500 grit compound)

Ashtray sand -- finest
Play sand -- more grit
Mortar sand -- even more grit

Spritz a little Magic O on it and it might even help melt some things.

Be sure to get the guy a broom to clean up the mess.

Thanks Peter, I guess after giving so many smartass answers I deserve more than a few. :nodd

This has been discussed ad nausem with this gentleman. Last time he asked me how much it was going to cost to spread sand\salt on his lot, I informed him that his spring cleanup costs would go up, his storm sewer cleaning, his actual application costs because I have to mix the crap, store the crap and clean the crap off my trucks, he thought it might not be worth pursuing it on his lots, anyways.

I'm not sure what's available in your area but I plow some gravel roads around here and so I use very little salt mixed in. I have found a gravel yard here that has a very gritty black sand. Not really sand it's almost like very fine crushed stone. Not chunky just very coarse. Ive foung this to be the best for me. It has a very good bite. It spreads just fine through the v-box. Not sure if that's what you're looking for in a answer but good luck with your quest.

Just plain washed sand is the best, ASTM C-33 to be precise.

Now there's a worthwhile answer Peter. :nodd

I know, I was just asking for it.
