While going through one of the storage buildings at the University today that is slated for demolition next summer, I found an interesting jewel. I found a brand new Caterpillar 3204 Diesel engine. I haven't been able to find much information on this particular engine other than it was only a prototype, and never manufactured. A few of them were built at the Caterpillar Tech Center for experimentation and such, and it appears that I found one that was donated to Bradley University at some point. I gather that is it a 4-cylinder version of the more popular 3208.

Anyone have any further information on this engine?

I'll try to get some photos later this week for anyone interested.

It might not be a prototype, I've found a few mentions of this engine in some different models of off-highway equipment. At any rate, information seems very limited.

Our some of our dozers have 4 cylinders but I'm not sure if they are 3204s...

3204s were common in old D3 and D4 dozers. They were a throw away engine and had headgasket issues.

3204's are used in the older crawlers as mentioned before and yes...being related to the 3208..it is a throw away motor...unless you want to replace the head and gasket all the time...oh..did I mention the cam?:smoking
