I need a new pair of nerf bars for my 04 Regular cab Ram . I had no problems with my black Westin signature series 3" bars on my 97. Westin newly offers a Platinum series stainless bar that is chrome plated . Anybody know about them ? Their reason for chrome over stainless is stainless WILL pit over time when exposed to commonplace chlorides . Sounds logical to me.

although i have not used the crome/stainless it seems as with everything the salt and wear will eventually get to it... i run the black westin bars on mine they seem to hold up with a little tlc and if they start to get scratched or rusted ya can always clean them up and repaint them... just got to keep an eye so ya touch up paint and clean off rust before it eats them through...

Yeah, make sure you clean them. My dad had a 97 with the same Westin black nerf bars, and by the time we sold the truck, they were almost rusted through! That's with 2 refinishes! Oh well...
On his 02 he has Go Industries chrome, they don't cost much, and are really, really solid! They are holding up nice.

u should buy a set of black ones then have them powder coated.

I have the black Westins and they get resprayed once yearly. Even with mudflaps, the rear bends under the rear "quad" door gets pitted and starts its rust thing. Not hard to touch up though with some masking off of nearby body parts and complete it with black paint.

What I would do is get a black set, have them sandblasted and powdercoated to the truck color. Keep in mind that the powdercoat from the factory is probably very thin, and will chip easy.
Then I would find some of that 3M film they put on the bottom of the rocker panels for even more protection.
Sandblasting and powdercoating I would imagine would be less than $100,

I run stainless they have no pits or rust problems. Look great, had them on the old truck for 3 years, looked as good as new when I traded that truck in. Plus no work painting or sandblasting every year!!! ( Rather be fishin or huntin IMO )

Isnt there a new stainless steel plow out ?

I was thinking that a natural polished stainless nerf bar would better match my stainless Fisher X blade and still match the chrome on my SLT, like chrome bars would

I run the all stainless nerfs from either Levene or Back country i have never had to touch mine the steel mounting plates rust but i touch those up with paint. I have 4 seasons on a set and they look like the day i put them on.
Westin Powder coated nerfs i have never see a set yet that didnt rust out and if let go become unsafe i have stepped on rusted Westins and bent them , wouldnt waste my money on anything but SS.
