Are you guys finding it to be a mild winter, or is this a normal winter for you.
Its been very mild , up and down temps here in southern ontario. Only one plowable event, and it wasnt a big dump.
How are you guys doing in other areas.
thanks

We had two early plowable events in my part of connecticut after that its been pretty warm.Todays high supposed to be somewhere around 53.We had about 5 rain storms now that should have been snow. They say in another week or so the pattern could change to a more snowy one. Will see what happens.

It's a litte milder than normal, but in this area we don't usually see a whole lot of plowable snow until late Dec\early Jan.We have had two plowable events so far.Salting has been on par for average years, with 6 events so far.
With the wierd weather over the past few years,I don't know if anything can be considered "normal" anymore.

I agree totally! It depends on what you're comparing to.
Last year's weather, with weekly heavy snow storms was normal around here in the late 60's and early 70's.
Then we went through a period where the snow melted off completely between storms, you had to race to plow it before it melted!
3 years ago, we had a winter where I plowed my route only once, and that was partially. If it weren't for the salt trauck, I'd have been in a worse jam than I was.
So I agree with Chris, it's hard to say what's normal anymore, we've seen so many extremes here lately.
I hope for a better second half of the season than the first, though.

It is also one of the benefits of having seasonal contracts,as you still get paid even if your not plowing. It is always a difficult sell after a slow season,as people think they will be throwing away money if we get little or no snow. After a real heavy winter, most people jump at the chance to lock in at a fixed rate.
That's funny that you started this thread. I had just closed my chart for comparing this year to the past three since I've kept records.
So far this year we have had more snow (32") than any other year ( '00-1 13", 01-2 19" and 02-3 28"), but fewer "snowfalls" (3 compared to 4, 6 and 9).
Rain and temps in the high 30s and 40s this year are definately throwing a monkey wrench into things. If the rain we got this month had been snow ....:(
I'm not even getting calls for sanding or Magic Salt from the thawing and refreezing.:headwall
Our "normal" is to not have to break out the plows until January. So far we have 22" out of 3 events, so this is definitely a wierd year so far. Now things are about normal, though temps have been above average for a week or so. For what it's worth, the before the season long range Winter of 2003-2004 casts that I had read said that we would have periods of warm & periods of cold weather for this season. Not a really long cold spell like a "normal" winter might have LOL. From these posts, I'd say that they are actually correct for once omg I had seen last night that a long range cast said another week & a half of this southwest flow (warm air) in the upper atmosphere, then things should get back to normal. Then we just have to get Jay & Bill to do that dance again to make some moisture cruise in when the temps go south again.:grinz

We have had a whopping 7.8" so far
That is almost 28" below normal.

Unofficial total this year around here is about 31" (two storms, one about 26-28 the other 5") our 30 year average is 41" for the season. So we are well ahead of an average year but it has been very warm the last two weeks or so. From what I've read and seen maybe some colder weather will be here to stay in a couple of weeks, but then again thats what I heard two years ago when we had 12" for the season :huh.

I remember that year. I plowed i think 4 times total.
I took care of a bunch of properties over in Albany that year and had one seasonal customer write me in June asking for a partial refund(wanted 1/2 their money back).
They figured they should get a refund due to the low snowfall and the low amount of times that they were plowed that year.
I had a very nice talk with them explained how would they feel if the roles were reversed and we got twice the snow as normal, should i be able to charge them extra money in that situation?
They saw the light then and stopped asking for money back.
