Hello All! I hope everyone is having a great holiday!
I received from a friend a handheld scanner for Christmas. I like the NOAA weather alerts!
I have never really played much with them before. Now I need to track down some frequencies. Does anyone out there subscribe to one of those frequency services or directories or know where I can get some simple local PD/FD frequencies?
Thanks!

If you're in Orange County (home of O.C.C.!!) or nearby Ulster, this link should provide you with a whole bunch of freqs. to enter into your scanner.

Herk, just keep the thing out of sight if you ever get stopped for something, police frequencies or even the ability to store those frequencies will get you a hard time.
Its illegal in NY to "equip a motor vehicle with a radio receiver capable of receiving frequencies allocated for police use.." carries a stiff fine and they can seize the radio.

I don't plan on keeping it in the truck with me...running out of room as it is with cell phones, gps, ipod, two ways for the sidewalk crews, coffee cups, breifecase, catalogs, 16 pair of worn out gloves (each missing its partner), etc etc etc.... LOL!
But thanks for heads up guys!

In Indiana if you get caught with a scanner in a vehicle, and do not have a valid reason for it, i.e. firefighter, police, ems, you can and will be arrested for it. We have arrested several burglary suspects lately, and they all had scanners in their cars.

John , are you an officer? The thought I have is my scanner has a weather channel , and as a plower we would be useing the scanner for weather updates and as far as the police and fire channels would be useing for traffic updates. A far cry from a guy in a car driving around with a scanner in the vehicle.. Also as an officer (if you are) would you be likely to cite a plower for having a scanner? Just some of my thoughts.

Lazer Man,
Yes, I am a Police Officer, and I understand where you are coming from. I would not cite any of the plowers in my town for having a scanner, actually I know two of them that do carry scanners, and I don't have a problem with that. I would check with your local Police Department as far as having a scanner with you. Again, I would not hassle any of our local plowers, but I do have some guys that I work with that would, and they are the same guys that would write their own mother a ticket.

I am unaware of any laws like that around here. I keep my handheld scanner with me all the time and not a word has ever been said to me.

CT dropped their restrictions a long time ago. HOWEVER! If the PD has ANY reason to suspect you of a crime, if can be considered a "burglery tool". Same as a mag-lite can be a weapon, burglery tool, etc, etc. :D

Snowboy,
I know it's wrong, but some of the guys I work with just don't get it. I don't understand why they do it, but it's thier choice, not mine. You get a lot more from people if you are nice and respectful of them. Also, I can see writing people $115 tickets, that just is too expensive to me, unless it is an extreme case, and then they get what they deserve.
