okay, i'm resurecting a skidsteer. i had to get another flywheel for it. the stator from orignal will not work with the new one. they have the same casting number. so instead of trying to find another flywheel. i'm going to get a gm one wire alternator and bolt a small pulley on the end of the flywheel. i'm not sure how big of a pulley i need. 2:1 sound right? thanks

Diesel alternators are usually spun around 3:1 compared to the engine. You need to find the power curve for the alternator your installing, and then calculate the optimum RPM range to spin it.From there you can calculate it based on the engines pulley size and normal operating RPM.

i forgot to mention that its a gasser. onan 25 hp. so i think it never sees much over 2500 rpm but there is no tach so i'm not sure. thanks wyldman.

You will need to use a very small alternator then,as most of the bigger ones can draw a lot of HP.You only have 25 (max) to work with.

A smaller Denso alternator from an older Honda,Mazda,or other import would work well. They were only 35 amps, and quite compact.
