well lets do a poll and see who is running what, the poll is mutiple choice in case you have more then 1 plow with a different edge. I am just trying to get some real world numbers, thanks.

Mostly 'U' edges for me, 12 to be exact! I do switch from time to time from steel/'U' edge on my rear plows. Depends on the type of storm, temps, etc.

5/8" Steel here, scapes nice and clean, and the price is definately right, for the life of the edge, $65 ain't too bad....

Not sure of the exact specs on the edges, but they are supposed to be carbide. We get them from Champion machinery, they use them on the road graders.
Judging by the incredible wear we get over steel (they last 4-5 years min),they must have some kind of carbide in them.

Pure carbide would not hold up well as an edge, it would be too brittle and either chip or shatter.
They use high carbon steel for earth moving equipment edges, I don't know the percentages, but it's a blend that makes the steel more durable.

Mostly urethane for the last couple years, except now the two new Blizzard 810s are still steel. As soon as MPT finishes its urethane for them, we will try that .

We have 4 steel and 1 urethane. The U blade is on a 7.5 ft Western Pro on a 1/2 T Ford. It works great on gravel/ dirt roads. Doesn't "road grader" in like a steel. Just drop it and go. BUT... I just looked at it this morning. Less than 2 seasons of light to moderate plowing and it is almost worn out. It seems more succeptible to the wear on the far sides not in the middle. This is about 3/4" thick so it may be a little thinner than what it should.
Bottom line- I like it for dirt and gravel, but the wear on this one was worse than steel. Price was easily 2.5 x steel. Thoughts???

szorno - I have tested 'U' edges from 1/2"-1 1/2" thick. From the data that I have gathered, I would not put less that a 1" thick 'U' edge on any plow! The ends of the edge are the first to go, cracks, splits, etc. And the 'life' for anything under 1" is quick, with wear patterns that are not very uniform. If you replace it with a 1 1/2" edge, you will see the results that manufactures claim. (IME)
Personally, every new edge I purchase from now on, will be 1 1/2" thick.

With the exception of my rear plows, they will remain 1" thick!

maybe when dino has his end of season sale
ill put one on my c-8

Ditto Snoworks comments. 3\4" thick would be what you put on an ATV or lawn garden tractor type plow. And if I was using an ATV for walks it would have a 1" thick actually. Whoever sold that to you should have done a better job of matching the product you needed for your application maybe?? I had to do a little maintenace & welding on one of my plows today, so I took a close look at the urethane while I was putting out the fires on it LOL. Got a few little tears & nicks on the ends, and the wear pattern looks awful wavy compared to how well it scrapes. Looks nasty, but works well still.

Combination of Urethane (3) and Steel edges (6). Two V's have steel, two V's have Urethane. Three straight blades with steel, ATV with urethane and skidsteer plow has steel edge. First year really giving urethane a go. We had three V's with urethane but switched the residential truck back to steel. Got a couple of complaints from customers and the driver didn't like the urethane. Urethane catchers have all ripped off, so we're back to OEM catchers on the Boss V's.

We use all four.
Our back blades have been rubber for about 15 years. All the new back blades are urethane.
We are wearing in our Fishers and they get switched to urethane. We also have one Boss V with steel yet, it's our backup plow truck but also has our anti-icing sprayer on it.
Urethane on the Daniels and our Western for sidewalks.
We have a carbide edge encased in rubber on our Monroe 10'. I forget the name, but it has worked very good for us. It's 3 seasons old and still has a couple inches to go. I'd like it to wear out faster so we can switch this one to urethane also.

We have been running 100% u edges on western v plows for 5 years. Very good results. The center deflector works great, no trailing in the center.

Carbides(or the ones I have gotten ahold of) are regular steel wilth a grove cut into the middle of the edge that hits the pavement and carbide inlaid in there. I had to grind the inside edges on my V edges and grinding the carbide part WAS NOT HAPPENING :headwall
The steel ground right away but I had to grind it away till I got to the carbide then zap the carbide part with a plasma cutter. Couldnt finish the job since I kept poping breakers so I took a hammer and whacked it twice and it snapped clean off. It is very brittle stuff but it also dosnt get phased by a 4 1/2" grinder/abrasive disk(and I mean I didnt even leave a mark) so I would say the wear is pretty good ;)

Steel edge for me. This is my second edge. The original one was 3/8" thick, and this one is 5/8" thick. SnowyBowtie, we have the same size and brand plow, same truck as far as size and namebrand, and same thickness cutting edge! :D Mike ;)

Urethane edges can be made for any blade. Give me a call and we can discuss your size requirements.

I think since this pole was put up many more guys are running Carbide. I voted carbide because of the Xtenders on the LP. I wouldn't run anything else. Unless I had a special application for the U edge. ie pavers and/or sidewalk clearing with a skidsteer.
for some reason I want to take a trip to switzerland......:haha Saw your other pics Holder c4.74 Awesome looking machine. Welcome to LTS.

I wonder if the cities ever considered putting Xtenders on thier trucks. It may be something to consider on a truck and see how they last.

Matt,
Around here the municipals run a full carbide edge - it's sandwiched in the steel. I got a few hunks once upon a time, and we welded them on to the box scrapers for the tractors. If I can find a piece, I'll fire up a pic of it - pretty neat setup.

Matt, i've brought up the carbide thing many times to the powers that be but
i am always met with the same responce...they cost to much, so i guess we just continue to change our steel edges after every couple of storms instead of every year
