Scott here is some pics from a Case compact i built in Nov should be about the same vintage has your JD kolher very rebuildable engine i didnt have enough room in PM's and didnt have your email . If you and your dad want to pull the engine i would be glad to repower it for you.
Also i would encourge you to do has much has poss has it looks tuff but is really a easy and well built engine . Kolher's web site has manuels free for download on all there engines and would be a good project for you and Dad if not once again i would be glad to take it on.
Biggest things during a older Kolher rebuild is replacing the Connecting Rod they are a problem boring cylinder and running new piston and replacing both vavles are a must , i also install new style valve seats has this engine was from the leaded days . let me know.
