Ok.......have been looking around at smaller size SUV'S with serious off-road
ability.
What do you all think about the New Hummer H3
This would be an every day car for my wife to drive to and from work as well as a weekend play toy.
We do a lot of camping,ATV riding ,Fishing etc.
Just thought that i would put this out there and see if anyone has had any experences with this SUV.

Thanks Scott.

H3 is a solid platform, very rugged, its missing one thing,an engine. It is underpowered,3.5 inline 5cyl just isnt enough for its weight. They should have put in the 4.2 6 cyl out of the envoy/trailblazer.If you can live with sluggish performance,it'd make a nice truck.

The August '05 Motor Trend has a comprehensive article on the H3.

Pretty much gives good marks, but criticizes the powertrain. Not enough power - but they are expecting this to be resolved with the addition of a turbo in the Alpha model due out next year.

They all complain about the power but in performance numbers but it's not a race car.
It runs the 1/4 mile 1 sec slower than the Rover sport and 3/10's slower than the Yota Land cruiser. The Jeep is very quick and beats it by 2 seconds.
For what it does off road it's worth buying, to me anyways, unless off roading to you is a dirt road.

Joey, peak numbers dont mean much, the 220hp doesnt come until a hi rpm,and when you need it it just isnt there.Im sorry but a vehicle in that range should have decent tip in and cruising performance, which it doesnt. In every other catagory it is a nice ride.A turbocharger while helpful isnt the answer,it needs a bigger engine.

I'm glad to see a new thread! I was worried no one seems to post here! I thought the Hummers were availiable with Diesels?

i asked the sales guy if a diesel was avaliable and the answer was NO
although he said that all of the sales guys would like to see the Duramax in the H2s.......but nothing going to happen in the near future.

I think the Hummer line that GM makes is a yuppie mobile. You need to get the older hummers that were built by Am General I think hats who made it before GM. I was told you can get the real hummers here in Canada in Toronto. The same hummer that the Army has of course you don’t need blast proof flooring in it.

Hollywood celebrities drive those things around town. Ashton kutcher and Demi Moore have on of them so did Nick and Jessica Simpson. I think the hummer is out there so you can make a statement like look what I have. I have money you don’t type deal. I should add most folks not all have it for that reason I believe.

I work in an affluent city and allot of the folks there drive Hummers, Porchas, Land rover range rover, Lexus.. They don’t need that to drive on a paved road and to come to Home Depot to buy a box of screws. They drive it for there huge ego not for its huge cargo capacity.

If you want it for real off roading I doubt it would last you long but if you just want to drive on a gravel road or throu some mud puddles it looks good enought for that.

Dave.

While the H1 is a rugged machine it is not the all out off roader most think. It has very little flex and is big. I would bet the H3 could leave it behind on a trail run with a skilled driver.

Is it the H1 that the Army used in desert storm? Same in Iraq? does GM make both machines?

If you realy want to go off roading try this. I bet it will beat the H1 and H3 hands down.

The HMMWV or Humvee was what most called the originals.

They were built by AM General under the Hummer name (what most civilians call H1's currently)...

The original bare bones Hummers were made for military use only (no tvs, big wheels, or luxury seating)...

Within the past 5 years GM purchased the rights to the Hummer and took it to 3 levels, (H1 (modeled after the original military design but in civilian form) H2 (off of the Tahoe/suburban/yukon platform) and now the H3)...

So Jay you cant get a H1 new it would be a glorified hummer with TV and a toilet in it as well as a few other amenities.

Up until only a short time ago one could not obtain a surplus military Hummer legally. They have no side impact protection, safety seats, etc. so for the longest time they were made illegal for release to the general public. You can still get H1's like the ones that ARNOLD drives around in...

Ohhh ok I'll have to look into that sometime.. *L* Next lifetime i think or if i win the lotto.

A Diesel hummer would make a great plow truck wiht a Blizzard low pro on the front.

I still rather have an UNIMOG. Which will kick a H1 butt. Plus you can get a factory built snow blower for it and 12' heavyduty high way plows.

Yes unimogs are nice. I think I’ve seen 1 or 2 cement trucks on a unimog frame. Rare occasion that you see one here in the city.
