View Full Version : Wings too heavy?
There is a past thread similar to this, but I don't recall a solution. I've a Western pro 8', w/prowings, conventional w/cable pump. The thing doesn't seem to want to lift with the wings on. It'll lift maybe three inches or so, but that is the limit. When I'm stacking and the blade is basically riding up the pile, the cylinder will fully extend--and when I take the wings off its fine--but it doesn't seem to be able to do the trick with the full weight of the blade and wings. Fuid levels are fine and, as stated, it works well without the wings. Is there something I can do to get more fluid pressure/flow to the lift cylinder. I just put the wings on and like what they do, but need to be able to lift the blade higher than 3"! Would turning the lift valve screw in a tad be a possible solution? Per the manual, I assume if I go to far that I'll pay in poorer angling performance.
Any imput would be appreciated, before I mess with it.

You need to have the pump pressure tested, probably set to low.
Crash, you were right on with the pressure. I couldn't come up with a guage. Probably should order one. I did turn the pressure relief screw on the pump in about a 1/4 turn. That would increase the pressure approximately 225 psi, per the manual. The blade with wings now raises to about 12" (ground to bottom of the edge) as opposed to the 3". Without the wings it raises to 17 1/2" (as far as the cylinder will extend as the housing contacts the frame when the arm is that elevated. Without a gauge to check, would you risk another 1/8th or 1/4 turn in? I am told that if the pressure is too high, it will simply blow the 0-ring under the pump out. I wouldn't want to damage the pump itself.

Do another 1/4 turn, but get a gauge on there when you get a chance. If you have to buy one, make sure its atleast a 5000psi just to be safe.
I was the one that started the cant raise plow with wings thread.
Final solution, I took and tore motor off housing, drained all the fluid and found filter laying in bottom of resiviour, and a bunch of muck down there as well. Took the blocks off the sides of the pump housing where cables go in to access fluid port holes and blew them out with brake clean and compressed air, scrubbed out resivour and reinstalled everything. took and readjusted my lift cable as it should be and it works great!!! Think it was all the muck and crap clogging ports that were the biggest problem, pump used to scream and squeel from the day I had it installed (bought used) and after 4 years and no maintenance on my behalf (I know, I know) it works better than ever, speed of plow is ALOT faster and now makes no noise...and it lifts plow with eings just fine:)

That's the value of this site. Makes trouble shooting a keyboard away. I did increase the pressure another 225 psi with the adjustment on the pump. It raises right up with no problems. Seems to angle faster as well. Appeciate the input guys. Merry Christmas to you!
