I have an appointment in a few minutes to get my tires changed, but the guy from the shop just called me with a concern:
My current tires - 245/75/16
I ordered - 235/85/16 (Discoverers MS Load E)
Guy from shop says "his book says 245/75" is recommended for my truck (Silverado 1500 Ext. Cab)
I ordered the 235/85's based advice that I read here on this board in *many* threads.
Am I making a mistake? Should I cancel appt. and re-order 245/75?
Thanks!

I'd go with the tires you ordered. They have a much higher weight rating than the alternative which most likely have a "C" rating. They also will be skinnier than the other which will work better in snow. Diameter should be pretty close, the dealer should be able to tell you the difference but it shouldn't interfere with body parts.

He says they're a little skinnier and almost an inch taller, but he doesn't seem to know much else.
Thank you!

235 85 16 will be fine. They are same size as 265 75 16 and I believe that’s what the book shows as the max size. Even though some guys go bigger. The problem I had is places like wal-mart / sams club think because you want 235’s they are going down in size and wont sell them to you. When actually you are going to a load range E tire that is stronger. They are just stupid in their thinking and going by a company guideline. I haven’t found any real tire shops that have any problem with putting them on.

The 235s should fit no problem. They are great winter tires, but they are going to look odd on that truck, only being a 1500 and sitting low with that tall skinny tire. That size/rating tire is rarely put on such a light duty truck, but as long as there on a winter set of rims Id say there the best tire you could get on there. That tire is a lot more than you need as far as load, and im sure its going to firm up the ride quite a bit.

Go with the 235's for the winter, you won't be sorry.

Thanks for the fast replies, you guys are incredible!
She's up on the lift right now getting the Cooper 235's and a fresh alignment.
Check out these prices, I think these guys are doing right by me:
4 Cooper Discoverer M&S Load E - mounted/balanced - $545 (includes tax)
Alignment - $59.95 (plus tax)
They even gave me a ride home since it's going to be there a while and I live just down the street. Maybe my luck is changing...

I run 235 / 85 / 16 B F Goodrich Mud Terrain T/a's on my k-2500 GMC (1985) and it has been just INCREDIBLE tackling all the snow the truck cares to push you'll like the size for your winter use.

Same here, they work great.
The 235's are shorter than the 245's.
the second # the aspect ratio on the 235's is higher so your getting a shorter and wider tire? you should be getting a taller tire not shorter ones.
I would reorder.
some load range D tires can carry all most as much as the load E's you need to read the small print on the tire.

That's really odd, because I spoke to 3 different Cooper dealers and all 3 are telling me that the 235/85/16 is slightly taller/skinnier than the 245/75/16. I know there's always a chance of mistake on the phone, but same mistake from 3 separate dealers?
One thing for sure - 235 is the width of the tire in millimeters, which is obviously more narrow than 245 millimeters.
In any case, the new ones are already mounted now and I'm going to pick it up shortly, so there won't be any re-ordering now.

The first # 245 is the hight of the tire, or with of the side wall.
The second #75 is the with of the tread, it is a ratio #, to the side wall.
The third # 16 is the rim size.

235 millimeters = 9.2519685 inches
245 millimeters = 9.64566929 inches

SnoFarmer - please know that I'm not trying to be argumentative, I'm a rookie just going by the facts presented directly from Cooper.
9.2 inches would be a very short tire.

The 235/85s/r16 are about an inch taller than the 245/75/r16. Combine that with the narrower tread width,it makes for a terrific snow tire. Most 245/75r16 are 30-30.5" tall, most 235/85/R16's are 31.5" -31.75". Dave, the thing your getting wrong is 245 is the width of the tread, and the height is the aspect ratio, which is only 75% of that. 75% of 245 is less than 85% of 235.Its as simple as that.:)

I think you have me mixed up with another post, unless there's more than one Dave in this thread. In any case, good to know I didn't choose the wrong tires - just got it back and they're awesome! Bill was a little higher in the end than I'd hoped, they had to replace a bad right side inner tie-rod end.
Sno - glad you didn't take it wrong, and yeah the debates are educational. Learned more about tires in a couple days on here then I knew my entire life LOL!

235/85/16
The 235 is the width of the tire
the 85 is a percentage of the width and is the height of the sidewall
the 16 is the rim size

Dave,
John was referring to this post that you made. Unfortunately you stopped quoting his post before he got to the part he was helping you with, and only quoted the part of the sentence that agreed with what you had posted. ;) He was telling you why the one tire is taller even though it seems odd.
