my Boss with a rt3 hook up is sparking at the plow frame when it touches the truck frame and I use the toggle switch to power up the cylinder. Is this common. Is it tring to find a ground? I checked all connections and grounds. thanks Craig

Hi Craig,
My RT3s do the same thing - it's exactly as you said - searching for the ground. A common occurence with no ill effects, or so I've been told.
Hope all is well and we'll see you around - should catch a cup of coffee sometime.

I could be wrong here, butI would think that is not right. My 9'2" Boss V never did that. With the RT3 I had there is a ground wire in the heavy 2 wire connector ,if its working correctly, there shouldnt be enough voltage drop across that ground wire to create a spark between the frame of truck and rt3 frame.Id tighten and clean the ground connections at the plow side, and truck side, and make sure the connector is clean and well greased with dielectric compound.Running it with a poor ground will lead to motor, soleniod or wiring problems,as the power searches for a ground, and the low voltage takes its toll on the motor.

John is right, there should be no spark. The plow gets it's ground through the plow connector,so if it's sparking, you have a bad ground.

Maybe I've been lead astray afterall!!
I would follow up on what John said, as I always do a pre-season inspection of all wiring and hoses, clean up grounds and contacts, and coat with di-electric. Also thouroughly clean the 13 pin connector regularly and again protect with di-electric.
It seems like mine have done it, but not all the time - that being said, I have never had any problems with pumps or the like in any of the Boss plows we've owned, including one in service for over ten years. I guess that could always change - knockin on anything wooden right now.

No need to apologize,Jerre is one of the best dealers to buy a plow from.:D
I brought them in to support our local guys, who don't want to drive that far,or have the hassle at the border.

mine melted the springs for the pins. boss solution was to put a gripper washer between the cable and pump body

Your sparking is directly related to the ground. If you use muscle grease as I do, you could even start a little fire with the sparks. I tracked the cause down tothe pin connectors. The brass pole on the male side was not making good contact with female side due to constant removal and installation. Take a screwdriver and separate the brass male end where it is split. Dilectric grease is also a good idea.
