just wondering when there is snow on thanksgiving, are most of you thankful to be able to get out and make money plowing? or would you rather be with your family members eat turkey? some of the family outings aren't for everyone and you know how they can be to deal with sometimes when a large group gets together once or twice a year.

I know that snow is nice but my personal preference is that i look forward to thanksgiving and would rather be there relaxing. i have the rest of the winter to be behind the wheel plowing.

When it snows you gotta go. Luckily in this region most often we don't face that decision. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

I'm working the FD today, I've got a friend working the FD tonight for me so I can plow.

Haven't seen my son since Monday, hopefully I'll get to spend some quality time with him tomorrow evening. We watched A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving together Monday night, I think we'll watch A Charlie Brown Christmas tomorrow. :)

Have a good Thanksgiving everyone.

Dan

There truly is no choice when we all entered into contracts back in sept or before most of us but all should know you have made a committment to be 24/7 7 days week for the next 6 months. We have been out most all night and still have to work tonight.

Christmas is probley the one that even though my girls know my committment to snow is the hardest to walk out the door on we have plowed snow the last three Christmas eves and days it is truly gut wrenching to see the look in my girls eyes , becuase i want my guys to beable to have that day off i and my brother usally work and keep the 24 hr joints open til later that night when the rest of the guys can join in.

Last year on Christmas day i got a present from my guys that meant the world to me since they knew i had worked the last two christmas day mornings i went down to the shop at 4am my jaw dropped and then maybe even a tear when i seen all the trucks online running when i asked why they just said lets wango Z tango a term i use with them when its time to go and that if we all work has a team we can share christmas at home cant find a better group of guys than that.

The committment to not just plowing but being a small buss owner period taxes us all has said in another thread today i have honestly gave more to my buss's than i have to my own family . I can only hope that someday my girls will understand i do what i do for them .

Finally got snow and am ready to try out new plow i just built. Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, and may you all have a Happy and Prosperous New Year:blizzard

i totally understand that we all have to plow because it's what we do for a living and we have contracts to do it. my question was really, is there anyone that really doesn't mind having to plow on thanksgiving because they hate dealing with extended family outings. i was expecting people to say taht they don't plow because it's thanksgiving.

Plowing has to be done, but I would stop in for the meal of course. No threat of snow in KC today and I also am working at the Fire Station today. I would have someone come in for me as well if it was snowing.:blizzard

I'm home watching my Lions get creamed...again, but I was out earlier salting. No big dinner to look forward to tonight since I'm Canadian. On Christmas Eve/Day we have been lucky here most years to not have any active weather. When we do, I work around present-time and dinner time so I can still spend it with family.

I am in FL, So I am sticking with family. But just in case, I hung the plow and spreader. Then gave keys to a buddy who hasn't gotten a mount for his new truck just incase it was needed.

What I would rather be doing and what I would be doing are two entirely different things. I'd rather be spending my time with family, it's a traditional gathering for us, but I'm obligated to serve my customers. It worked out that all of our weather occurred early morning and Thanksgiving Dinner went on as scheduled. My Aunt and Uncle were unable to attend due to poor travel conditions.

The last Thanksgiving where we had snow still haunts me. At that time my family was traveling to Pennsylvania for family visit and dinner, but there was a forecast of snow. I had to remain behind to serve my customers, and had dinner with my in-laws instead. It turned out my Grandma had cancer and hadn't told anyone, I missed the last Thanksgiving event she was at. I still torment over my decision.

Thanksgiving, I can always find time in my route to stop in and have a snack with familey. I can also remember a few Christmass we as a family have opened presents in the cab of a plow truck. Put a tree on the back and make the best of it.

Pickering snow, If nothing else call a few times when you are out working and she will remember that a lot more then not having you around on special days.

Like most I dont have a choice but I would rather not plow on 3 dates: Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and Christmas Eve, it can snow any other day and I dont mind. Iam traditionally doing something with family on those days as I was today.

I was thinking for a while that I may have to plow but we ended up missing the accumlating snow by about 30 miles or so.

We plowed early yesterday morning out in western MA as my father still carries a few small accounts. The primary truck we use had some problems, so we used his half ton (I wrenched my back pulling out the plow for this). Despite the intense squalls and steady snow, dinner went on as planned.

Luckily we dont get any snow until January round here anymore, but I feel what many are talking about-especially with the kids. Running my business, being small, puts a huge load on all of our shoulders busting our azzes hopeing someday it will pay off in dividends. My wife used to never get bothered by my lack of home time during the summer, but since our daughter was born it's really stressed us out. Typical summer hours are 6am getting things in order for the day, work typically till 5 pm, stop in for a quick bite if I have time, then back out for estimates getting back around 8-9pm then sitting in my office doing estimates till 11pm and start all over again, not everyday mind you, but typically that way 3-4 times a week. Daughter every once in awhile will hold onto me as I'm trying to leave and start wimpering "dont go papa", but what do ya do..:(

I'd rather be making money than sitting around with the people getting drunk anyday, we all live close together and see each other regularly anyhow, but I've always been a bit of a hum bug for holidays anyways:) since holidays mean I'm not working that day and typically Thanksgiving is the start date for my slow period in the feild since folks hold onto thier money till around march before they start buying jobs again

Well, I did both....since I have mostly commercial/retail. All I had to do was residential. I did drives in the morning and went to the family dinner.

I learned long ago there are no days off if its snowing. You just work around the parties. Same goes for Christmas and new years. It all works out.

^^^ what he said. I did that too... some residential drives and then off to eat dinner at a restaurant with the family.
