mini-pro 575 question

ok there are a few questions for this one.
1# what setting do u guys normally run at on the variable speed controler?
#2 if the salt is bad ( very powdery, small rocks) will this cause the spreader to not throw very far.
#3 how much salt should i be going through, if it is running at 50 (half way)???
